Senior Cat Care

How to spot signs of ageing?

Cats love to hide vulnerability, this means that they like to pretend everything is fine. Some key things to watch for include changes in behaviour (e.g. more cuddly when typically has been a “loner” or vice versa). Changes in appetite (either up or down), avoiding outside of the litter box, changes in thirst and changes in mobility. Mobility changes are often defined by a decrease in jumping up onto furniture, obvious limping is rare to see.

My senior cat is losing weight, what can I do?

It can be a sign of serious illness, so the first thing you should do is to have them assessed by a veterinarian. Many of the diseases which we find, can be corrected or progression slowed down significantly with early intervention.

What are some common health issues affecting senior cats?

Overactive thyroid, kidney failure, inflammatory bowel, arthritis, dental disease and cancer, are all relatively common problems in ageing cats.

Why is my senior cat having behavioural issues?

Altered behaviour can be an early warning sign for changes in overall health. If it is not just a temporary issue, then please make an appointment to have your cat checked over by a veterinarian.
